In August 2007 SpiritHouse Inc and community members from around the country began commemorating Black August, and the legacy of our Freedom Fighters, by participating in a month long Haiku poetry writing practice. For 7 years, we put out the Black August call for Haikus and received daily, weekly or one time contributions via email, snail mail and social media. Finally, we have compiled these beautiful declarations of struggle, love, resilience, and liberation to share with you. We can’t wait for you to see your Haikus in print.
This book is dedicated to our fallen freedom fighters and to those living behind bars, beyond borders and inside occupied land. May we continue to love, dream, heal, design and define our own liberation.
