Nommo is a Bantu word that means “the magical power of the spoken word to make material change.” This audio documentary project celebrates the oral tradition, vital to African/African American communities by sharing our truths and capturing our essence and our voice, our way. It is designed to reclaim our role as historical actors, by offering narratives that include stories of resistance, resilience and abundance, often distorted or omit from our history.
Nommo Seeks To:
- Reclaim the power of language through the legacy of the African Griot.
- Create supportive, safe and relaxed environments, for community members to share through Nommo workshops, and community gatherings.
- Increase communication in families, neighborhoods, with service providers, and policy makers that promotes fair, honest and equitable dialog.
- Create an audio/video archive of community, and individual stories that can be used as tools to facilitate larger community conversations.
