Choosing Sides seeks to inspire the imagination, creativity and confidence of today’s emerging leaders, as they take charge of their lives and proactively engage in community transformation. We remember that strong alliances between community organizers, community members, student leaders and gang-involved youth, led to the Civil Rights and Black and Brown Power Movements of the 60s & 70s. Therefore, we are committed to intergenerational work that supports grassroots initiatives led by community change-makers at every level.
Our Stories, Our Way – Our Stories, Our Way workshops provide tools for individual and/or groups to share everyday stories in a laid back, like you’re uncle’s family reunion tales, style. Participants will learn the art of audio documentation from choosing a story, to audio recording, editing and sharing your work. These workshops are designed for individuals and/or groups.
GROWING ACROSS GENERATIONS
How do we support dialogue, action and growth across generations? Growing Across Generations workshops break down what Paulo Friere calls “The banking concept of education” where, “the teacher teaches and the students are taught… the teacher talks and the students listen—meekly…”
Using participatory education techniques, facilitators and workshop participants discover things that help community groups, organizations, teachers and family members work together to create safe, welcoming and nurturing spaces that honors each persons contributions. Participants will create a plan of action that strengthens the intergenerational relationships in their lives and communities.
SpiritHouse Presents supports SpiritHouse programs through workshops, performances, community events and guest speakers. As “revolutionary artist” we work, as Toni Cade Bambara encouraged us, to “make revolution irresistible,” by develop innovative resources for individuals, community partners, educators and grassroots organizations that help them engage in re-imaging what our world should look like.
